Brown St, Redhead
Granny Flat Build
The brief
The owners of this Redhead property wanted to maximise the potential of their block with a high-quality secondary dwelling — one that would work equally well for extended family or as a long-term rental. The brief called for a structure with real longevity: solid construction, quality finishes, and a layout that did not feel like a compromise.
Critically, the lower level needed to earn its footprint too — providing secure parking, storage, and a dedicated workshop space, while the upper level delivered a genuinely comfortable, self-contained home.
Our approach
Altered Building and Renovations managed the entire project from initial concept through to handover — coordinating approvals, trades, and materials to deliver on time and without compromise on quality. The dual-level layout was developed to make smart use of the available footprint, with the ground floor dedicated entirely to utility and the upper level given over to light-filled living.
The brick and cladding facade was a deliberate design choice: brick at the base for permanence and thermal mass, cladding above to introduce texture and a contemporary edge. The result is a street presence that complements the main dwelling without competing with it.
Ground floor
The ground floor is dedicated entirely to utility and parking. It includes a generous double garage, ample storage pace, and a workshop and hobby space — giving the owners practical, secure amenity below the living area. A modern entry door surround and staircase connect the two levels, making a strong first impression from the street.
Upper level
The upper level is a fully self-contained residence. It features an open-plan kitchen and living area, two well-proportioned bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, a full bathroom with quality fittings, and a European laundry. The layout is light-filled and private, with every detail considered to make the space genuinely comfortable to live in.
Facade and exterior
The exterior combines full brick construction with contemporary cladding panels to create a facade that is both durable and visually striking. The brick base grounds the structure with permanence and low maintenance, while the cladding upper level introduces texture and a fresh, modern aesthetic that sits confidently in the Redhead streetscape.
The ground-floor entry features a modern door surround and a clean, well-proportioned staircase that draws the eye upward — framing the transition to the living space above with purpose and style. Every exterior detail was selected to ensure the granny flat enhances the existing property.
Materials and specification
Quality was non-negotiable across every element of this build — from the structural masonry through to the kitchen joinery and bathroom fittings. Full brick construction was used throughout, chosen for its durability, thermal performance, and near-zero maintenance requirements. Contemporary cladding panels to the upper facade deliver long-term performance alongside a modern finish.
The kitchen features quality cabinetry with engineered stone benchtops, soft-close hardware, and integrated appliances. The bathroom is a full fit-out with quality fixtures and tiling. The European laundry is compact and practical. Flooring throughout is durable and easy-care, selected to complement the neutral, modern palette.
The outcome
The Brown Street build stands as one of Altered's most complete granny flat projects — a benchmark for what is achievable when an experienced builder manages the process from start to finish with the client's brief front and centre. The owners received a fully self-contained two-bedroom residence with a generous garage, storage, and workshop below, built to last and finished to a standard that reflects the investment made.

Leonnie, Maitland
Happy to recommend Jesse and the team from Altered. They did a brilliant job at our house this year building a pool deck in a tricky yard (sloped & lots of council conditions) plus fencing, retaining walls and remodeling our pergola. The whole team were always professional, punctual & reliable. Leaving everything neat and tidy and being respectful of the rest of our property and our neighbours. They made the experience stress-free and we will definitely be using them again for our next few projects. Happy to recommend to anyone.
