Scholey St, Mayfield
Project Overview
Altered Building and Renovations renovated the original home and extended it to the rear, keeping the character and street presence intact while opening up a light-filled, open-plan living zone built for everyday family life and entertaining. The result is a home that feels considered from every angle, with an entertainer's kitchen at its heart.

Renovation & Extension
Altered Building and Renovations managed the project end to end — from design and drafting support and approvals through to trades, materials, and handover — with a clear strategy: retain and refresh the character rooms at the front, and direct the investment into a new open-plan living, dining, and kitchen zone at the rear where the family actually spends its time.
This is where experience earns its keep on a cottage renovation. Extending an older home means resolving level changes, structural connections, and the transition between old and new so it reads as one cohesive home rather than a house with an obvious add-on. Getting that right from day one is what separates a renovation that feels considered from one that feels bolted together.
The kitchen is the standout of this project, and it was designed to do more than look good — it was designed to work hard. Positioned as the hub of the new living zone, it gives the owners generous bench space to cook and prep, room for people to gather without getting in the way, and a clear line of sight across the living and dining areas so the cook is never cut off from the room.
The defining detail is a feature secret door that connects the kitchen through to a walk-through pantry and laundry. It's a small design decision that changes how the whole space functions: the everyday mess, while the main kitchen stays clean, calm, and ready to host.
The new living zone is defined by its raked ceilings — one of the most transformative moves in the whole project. The added height creates room for natural light to reach deeper into the home, making the living areas brighter through the day and reducing the closed-in feeling that older cottages so often carry. It's a clear example of how the right structural decision improves the way a home feels to live in every single day.
The outcome is a home that reads as a whole: recognisably a Mayfield cottage from the street, unmistakably a modern family home once you're inside.
Quality finishes were carried throughout the renovation and extension, selected to suit both the character of the original home and the contemporary feel of the new living zone. The kitchen was fitted out to entertainer standard, with the walk-through pantry and laundry designed for genuine everyday practicality behind the feature screen door. The raked ceiling was detailed to maximise volume and light in the main living space.
The Scholey St project is a clear demonstration of what a well-planned renovation and extension can do for an older home. The owners kept the cottage and the location they loved, and gained a home that finally works the way they live — an entertainer's kitchen built for hosting, a clever pantry and laundry that keep the mess out of sight, and a light-filled living zone lifted by its raked ceilings.

Leonnie, Maitland
Happy to recommend Jesse and the team from Altered. They did a brilliant job at our house this year building a pool deck in a tricky yard (sloped & lots of council conditions) plus fencing, retaining walls and remodeling our pergola. The whole team were always professional, punctual & reliable. Leaving everything neat and tidy and being respectful of the rest of our property and our neighbours. They made the experience stress-free and we will definitely be using them again for our next few projects. Happy to recommend to anyone.
